Transport – L’Aquila:

There are three main ways to reach L’Aquila. The first, is to travel by car taking the A24 (the autostrada connecting Rome and Teramo) that passes to the north of the city. L’Aquila can also be reached by other, smaller provincial highways. The second method is by bus.

There is an intercity bus (pullman) that travels directly from the Rome Tiburtina Railway Station to the main bus terminal found at the northern end of the city. The third way is by train. It is on a minor but very scenic line from Perugia via Terni to Sulmona.

The city has no airport so it is usually most convenient to fly to either the Ciampino or Fiumicino airports in Rome before traveling on to L’Aquila.

L’Aquila is small enough that it is quite easy to walk from one end to the other, but the station and the fountain of 99 are down a considerable hill from the city so you might prefer to ride a local bus up.

The train station (☎0862 41 92 90) is on the outskirts of town. (Ticket office ☎0862 41 28 08. Open M-Sa 6:15am-8:15pm, Su 7am-2pm.) Trains go to Sulmona (1hr., 11 per day 6:23am-8:47pm, €4.50) and Terni (2hr., 11 per day 6:15am-8:04pm, €6).

L’Aquila has two bus systems: blue ARPA regional buses and orange municipal buses. ARPA buses (☎0862 199 166 952) stop at the station near P. Duomo and go to: Avezzano (50min., M-Sa 38 per day 5:50am-8:30pm, €4.90); Pescara (1hr., M-Sa 20 per day 6am-9:10pm, €7.50); Rome (1hr., M-Sa 33 per day 4:40am-8pm, €9.10); Sulmona (40min., M-Sa 6 per day 6:20am-7:15pm, €4.50).

The yellow municipal buses stop at AMA markers and serve surrounding towns and sights. (☎0862 31 98 57; www.ama.laquila.it. One-way €0.90, 1hr. €1.10, 1-day pass €2.10.)

Tickets are available at tabaccherie, newsstands, bars, and the bus station, past P. del Collemaggio on V. Giacomo Caldora. A subway runs from the station to P. del Duomo. Find taxis (☎0862 22 115) at the bus station.
